Learning objectives :
- Understanding climate issues and the concrete role businesses play in achieving emissions reduction targets
- Use the GHG protocol to analyze an organization's carbon footprint and identify opportunities for reduction
- Identify your company’s most significant emissions and the actions you can take at your level
Course :
Session 1: Understanding Climate Issues and the Role of Businesses
Before taking action, we need to understand the broader context. This session lays the groundwork: what are the scientific and regulatory goals for reducing emissions, what is the carbon budget, and why do businesses have a central role to play in our collective path forward?
Example of a tool : Key concepts of the climate transition (the Paris Agreement: goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, 45% emissions reductions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050 / the carbon budget: the amount of emissions still “available” to stay below this threshold / the role of businesses in achieving these goals).
Case Study : Understanding the gap between current emissions trajectories and the Paris Agreement targets, and collectively discussing what this means in practical terms for businesses and for everyone’s role.
Session 2: Understanding and Using the GHG Protocol
To reduce emissions, you must first know how to measure and categorize them. The GHG Protocol is the global standard for mapping an organization’s emissions. Participants apply it to real-world cases from companies in various sectors to gain a practical understanding of it.
Example of a tool : The GHG Protocol (Scope 1: direct emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels and company processes, e.g., gas heating of a building / Scope 2: indirect emissions related to the consumption of electricity, heat, or steam, e.g., a site’s electricity consumption / Scope 3: all other indirect emissions across the entire value chain, e.g., employee travel, purchases of goods and services, waste generated).
Case Study : Analyze the carbon footprints of companies across various industries, identify which Scopes account for the majority of emissions by sector, and understand where the key levers for reduction lie for each type of organization.
Session 3: Identifying Actionable Steps for Your Company
The third session grounds the workshop in the participants’ reality: what are the most significant emissions within their own companies, and how can each person take concrete steps to reduce them at their own level?
Example of a tool : The workshop on identifying reduction levers (in small groups: map the company’s significant emissions by Scope / identify priority levers for action at the organizational level / and envision how each participant can contribute to reducing them within their scope).
Case Study : In small groups, discuss your company’s most significant emissions and identify concrete courses of action within your scope of responsibility, so that you leave with a clear understanding of your individual contribution to the organization’s carbon footprint.
When you leave this workshop, you'll know...
- Understanding emissions reduction targets and corporate responsibility in this context
- Use the GHG Protocol to analyze and categorize an organization's emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3)
- Identify your company’s significant emissions and the actions you can take
And it'll come in handy for...
- Make an informed contribution to your organization’s climate strategy
- Understand the implications of your company’s carbon footprint and communicate them clearly
- Moving from general awareness to a actionable understanding of your impact
