Learning objectives :
- Use the OKR framework to translate a long-term climate strategy into concrete, actionable 3- to 6-month goals
- Formulate clear objectives and measurable key results for a real-world climate case
- Delegate the management of Key Objectives and Key Results to boost your team's engagement
Course :
Session 1: Understanding the OKR Framework
A climate strategy for 2050 is inspiring but difficult for a team to translate into concrete actions. The OKR framework is the tool that facilitates this transition from the big picture to the operational level by structuring the cascade from the Vision down to day-to-day Actions.
Example of a tool : The cascading OKR framework (Vision: a qualitative and inspiring long-term statement, e.g. "By 2050, our company will have achieved carbon neutrality" / Objective: ambitious and motivating, 3–6 months, e.g., "Improve our carbon footprint by the end of the year" / Key Results: quantified and measurable to determine if the objective is met, e.g., "Reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 10%" or "Commit to a Science Based Targets program" / Actions: concrete and operational, e.g., "Set up a carpooling system," "Reduce internal air travel by 20%").
Case Study : Analyze the Vision-Objectives-Key Results-Actions framework using a climate-related example to understand what makes each level effective and identify common formulation errors at each stage.
Session 2: Formulating Your OKRs
Understanding the framework is one thing. Knowing how to formulate a good Objective (one that inspires without being vague) and truly measurable Key Results (ones that allow you to track progress without ambiguity)—that’s where the challenge begins. Participants practice formulating and refining their OKRs using real-world scenarios.
Example of a tool : Key phrases for formulating the different levels of an action plan (Vision: qualitative, inspiring, forward-looking / Objective: ambitious yet realistic, stated without specific numbers / Key Result: quantified, measurable, realistic, with a specific deadline / Action: operational, assignable to an individual or a team).
Case Study : Practice choosing clear Objectives and Key Results that are easy to measure using a real-life scenario, identify what makes an OKR "good" or "too vague," and refine the wording with peers.
Session 3: Translating a Real Company’s Climate Strategy into Action
The final session grounds the workshop in the participants’ real-world context: how to translate their own organization’s climate strategy into concrete OKRs, and how to delegate the management of these objectives so that the team truly takes ownership of them.
Example of a tool : The Strategic Alignment Workshop (in small groups: analyze a real company’s climate strategy, propose OKRs to translate the vision into team-level actions, then identify which Objectives and Key Results to assign to which team members to maximize engagement and a sense of ownership).
Case Study : Analyze a real company’s climate strategy, draft the corresponding OKRs for a specific team, and decide how to allocate leadership responsibilities so that everyone has a clear and engaging role in the process.
When you leave this workshop, you'll know...
- Use the OKR framework to translate a long-term climate strategy into concrete 3- to 6-month goals
- Set clear objectives and truly measurable key results
- Delegate OKR management to boost your team’s commitment to climate action
And it'll come in handy for...
- Make your company’s climate strategy concrete and inspiring for your teams
- Moving from general awareness to a clear individual and collective contribution
- Align your team with achievable and measurable emissions reduction goals
